Job Description:
MISSION:
The fundamental mission of the Research Management Group (RMG) is to facilitate and promote the research endeavors of the School of Medicine faculty. The RMG provides oversight and management of sponsored projects and ensures compliance with University and sponsor policies and expectations.
POSITION:
The Research Process Manager (RPM) reports to the Co-Directors of the RMG, who report to the Senior Associate Dean for Finance and Administration in the School of Medicine. The RPM is the Institutional Representative for sponsored projects and is responsible for management, compliance oversight, and facilitation of the complete sponsored research administration process for a defined set of School of Medicine faculty. Working in collaboration with faculty, business managers and other department and University staff, the RPM ensures timely, accurate proposal submission, develops budgets, and provides institutional signature, ensuring that the proposal meets sponsor, University, and School guidelines/regulations. The RPM functions as an expert partner and facilitator in post-award administration, coordinating with the PI and staff and sponsors to ensure that sponsored research funds are expended in accordance with internal and external policies, providing compliance oversight and guidance and policy communication, interpretation, and recommendations. The RPM is an advocate for a responsive, effective research administration process in a deadline-driven customer service organization.
RPMs undergo extensive and ongoing training, take certification exams to obtain signature authority on behalf of the University, and are trained and mentored by an experienced RPM. As a member of the RMG Team, the RPM works closely with a shared Associate, provides back-up to co-workers, and becomes an expert partner to teammates. RPMs also participate in problem-solving and continuous process- improvement efforts to improve customer service, efficiency and accuracy, and thus contribute to the success of the organization.
QUALIFICATIONS: Candidate must have:
- Minimum of two years of relevant experience in addition to a BA in business or sciences (MBA helpful), or equivalent experience or a combination of education and work that demonstrates the necessary level of analytical, problem-solving, initiative, judgment, decision-making, organizational and communication skills.
- 2 - 5 years experience in financial management and analysis in an academic organization, including budgeting, forecasting and accounting.
- 2 - 5 years experience in grant and contract research administration, pre- and post-award.
- Knowledge of university and government research administration policies and guidelines.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and communicate policies and guidelines, effectively, in writing and verbally, with the ability to deal with ambiguity.
- Ability to analyze complex situations, identify solutions and make appropriate determinations.
- Ability to effectively balance customer service with regulatory compliance.
- Ability to interface effectively with multiple faculty and staff with a customer-service focus
- Effective written and verbal communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills.
- Good leadership, diplomacy, judgment, and decision-making skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Strong organizational skills with ability to coordinate activities across various units.
- Advanced computer spreadsheet skills and ability to learn new systems.
Ability to work as an effective member of a team.

Working in collaboration with faculty, business managers and other department, hospital and University staff, the CT RPM directs and manages the clinical trial proposal and award process to ensure timely, compliant and accurate contracts. This includes protocol review and interpretation, interpretation and application of pertinent government regulations and guidelines, develops budgets, negotiates and provides strategic advice to the PI, as well as providing institutional review and signature, ensuring that the contract budgets and payment schedules/terms meets sponsor, University, hospital and School pre-and post- award guidelines/regulations. The CT RPM accepts the budget on behalf of the University, provides expert consultation and oversight to ensure that sponsored research funds are managed and expended in compliance with internal and external policies, and continues as the institutional representative throughout the life of the award. The CT RPM is a senior professional staff member, promoting a collaborative model of stewardship among faculty and staff and is an advocate for a responsive, effective research administration process, in a customer-service organization.

- Experience in research administration of grants and contracts, pre- and post-award; clinical department experience highly desirable;
- Knowledge of University and government research administration policies;
- Knowledge of patient care billing practices helpful;
- Experience in policy and guideline interpretation, communication, and application;
- Ability to read complex clinical protocols, discern budgetary implications for the procedures and processes described, and communicate such with PI and Study and Nurse Coordinators;
- Ability to negotiate budget and payment schedules with sponsor representatives;
- Ability to analyze and interpret financial system data, as well as generate and compile data in a manner helpful and understandable for faculty, department staff, OSR accounting or sponsors;
- Effective written and verbal communication skills;
- Good leadership, diplomacy, judgment, and decision-making skills;
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, customer-service environment;
- Ability to take initiative and work independently, consulting with appropriate School, University and hospital parties as needed for information and problem resolution;
- Ability to work as an effective member of a team, sharing workload and information;
- Strong organizational skills with ability to coordinate activities across multiple units (administrative, departmental, interdisciplinary and inter-school);
- Ability to effectively balance customer service with regulatory compliance;
- Must be flexible to deal with ambiguity and uncertainty in evolving processes and policies while still managing to accomplish the work;
- Advanced computer spreadsheet skills (Excel) and ability to learn new systems with ease.
