Online Handbook Preface
This material has been assembled from many sources for the information
of the medical faculty and staff and to aid the administrators who help
execute the policies and procedures of the School of Medicine. This is
the fourth edition. The first edition was issued in 1975; it was revised
in 1978 and again in 1987. We have attempted to make this Year 2000 edition
of the School of Medicine Handbook more complete and user friendly
by incorporating many of the former appendices into the corresponding
chapters, adding procedural checklists and organizing materials so that
each chapter is more of a stand-alone manual.
General University policies and procedures are found in the Handbook
for Academic Council Faculty, Medical Center Line Faculty, Academic
Staff Teaching, Other Teaching Staff (the University's Faculty
Handbook) and other University sources, such as the Stanford University
Administrative Guide and the Research Policy Handbook, which
also apply to the School of Medicine. The currently applicable versions
of these policies and procedures are available on-line.
All material in this handbook is meant to be consistent with the University's
policies and the latter take precedence. Moreover, in an environment
as dynamic as the University, in general, and the School of Medicine,
in particular, change will periodically occur in the policies and procedures
to which the faculty, staff and students are subject. Please check on-line
at http://med.stanford.edu/academicaffairs for
the currently applicable versions of those policies and procedures that
appear in the School of Medicine Handbook.
